Using Hypothesis with Assignments in CI Learn/Canvas

Using Hypothesis within Assignments allows some additional functionality over creating Module Items. Instructors can assess student work in SpeedGrader and also set due dates or dates of availability for the Assignment.

Creating a Hypothesis Assignment

1. Navigate to your Assignments page and click the + Assignment button
   
2. Enter a name for your Assignment and appropriate instructions
3. Scroll down to the Submission Type field
4. From the drop-down menu, choose External Tool and click Find
   
5. Select Hypothesis from the list of external tools available
   
6. On the next screen, you will be able to create a Hypothesis-enabled reading by linking to a publicly-viewable page or document, selecting a file from your Canvas file repository, selecting a published Canvas page in your course, choosing a file from Google Drive, selecting a JSTOR article, choosing a PDF from OneDrive. The screen will look like the one below
   
   1. Using a URL of a web page or publicly available PDF: On the “Link Resource from External Tool” screen, paste a link in the text box. Please note that the content at the link must be publicly viewable (i.e., not behind a login or paywall). Here we’ve chosen a Wikipedia article, but you can link to blog posts, open-access books, journal and news articles, HTML pages, etc.
   2. Using a PDF from Canvas: Note: You must upload PDFs to your Canvas file repository before completing the steps below. The Canvas File Picker does not allow for uploading new documents.
      You will see a list of files that have been uploaded to your Canvas file repository. Click on the title of the file you wish to use and click Submit.
   3. Using a Canvas Page: Note: The Canvas Page you use in Hypothesis must be published and visible to students.
      Click the button that says Canvas Page. You will see a list of Published pages from your course. Select the file you wish to use and then click the “Select” button.
   4. Using a PDF from Google Drive: Note: This process will change the privacy of the selected Google Drive file to “Anyone with the link can view,” creating a publicly-viewable URL for the document. However, the document URL will not be shared with anyone outside your course and cannot be easily discovered.
      On the Link Resource from External Tool screen, click Use Google Picker. You will be asked to authorize a Google account, and then you’ll be able to search for and select a file, or upload a new one. Click on the file you want to use and then click Select.
   5. Using a JSTOR Article: You can link to an article from CSUCI’s JSTOR page using a JSTOR Stable URL. For detailed instructions about how to use JSTOR articles with Hypothesis, check out our Using Hypothesis with JSTOR guide.
   6. Using a PDF from OneDrive: Note: This process will change the sharing permission of the selected OneDrive file to allow the PDF to be shown to anyone viewing the assignment.
      You will be asked to select a Microsoft account and/or authorize the Hypothesis LMS App to access OneDrive. Once logged on, browse to select a PDF to use in your reading. You may also select the Upload option to upload a new PDF to use. Only files available in “My files” are able to be used by Hypothesis. You will be unable to use PDFs that belong in any Shared Libraries.
   7. Using a YouTube Video: First you will need to know the URL of the YouTube video you wish to annotate. The easiest way to find this URL is to click the Share button from the YouTube page and copy the link from the Share window.
      In the Assignment Content window, click the YouTube button. Here you can paste the previously copied YouTube URL into the Select YouTube Video window and click the arrow icon to confirm your video is valid. You should see a green tick along with the video title confirming the link is correct and the video is not restricted.

7. You will be returned to the Configure External Tool screen. Notice that the URL text box is now populated.
8. If you’d like to have the document open in a new tab, allowing for more room for the text and annotations, click Load This Tool in a New Tab
9. Click Select
10. Edit the due dates, and any other settings you wish to change
11. Scroll down and click Save or Save & Publish
12. You will see your Hypothesis assignment on the Assignments page. When your students click on the Assignment, the web page or document will open with Hypothesis enabled.
