Adding Extra Attempts and Time to a Classic Quiz or Survey

Content adapted from Moderate Quiz Canvas Guide

The Moderate this Quiz link only appears in the quiz sidebar after a quiz is published.

Notes:

  • Depending on the size of your course, Moderate Quiz information may take a few minutes to update. You may have to refresh the page to view the most current data.
  • If you change the quiz settings while a student is taking a quiz, the new settings will not apply until the student has completed the current attempt.

Moderate Quiz Columns

The Moderate Quiz page displays the following information from left to right in six columns:

  1. Student name.
  2. The number of times the student has already attempted to take this quiz.
  3. Quiz time—completed attempts show the time it took for the student to complete the quiz; running time shows the remaining time the student has to complete the quiz.
  4. The number of remaining attempts, if any.
  5. Quiz score—for multiple submissions, the score is the most recent attempt.
  6. To refresh the page and make sure all column statistics are current, click the refresh icon.

Moderate a Timed Quiz or Survey for a Single Student

To add extra time or attempts to a timed quiz or survey, complete the following steps.

  1. Click Quizzes from the course menu.
  2. Once the list of quizzes has loaded, click on the name of the quiz.
  3. Click the Moderate this Quiz link from the sidebar on the right of the page.Screenshot of a published Classic Quiz with Moderate this Qquiz highlighted in a colored box
  4. Depending on the course size, you can use the search people field at the top or scroll down to locate a specific student.
  5. Click the Edit (pencil) icon at the end of the row to enter or refine the student’s time or attempts and open the Student Extensions dialogue box. Screenshot of Student Extensions dialogue box in Classic Quizzes to add additional time or attempts
*Extra attempts are available only when multiple attempts are allowed.
**Extra time on every attempt is only available if the quiz/survey is timed
  6. Enter the number of attempts and/or time in minutes.
Remember, when adding the extra time to a quiz/survey, it is just that, additional time. The additional time being given is not the total amount. For example, if a quiz has a starting time of 30 minutes and “Student G” gets 1.5x time, it would be 45 minutes total (30 min + 1/2time or 15 min = 45 minutes). So, you would add “15,” in the ‘”Extra time” field of the Student Extensions window.
  7. TLi recommends that the Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt box is checked before clicking Save.

Moderate a Timed Quiz or Survey for Multiple Students

From the Moderate Quiz page, click the checkbox [1] next to each student’s name. If you want to select all students, click the top checkbox [2]. Click the Change Extensions for [#] Selected Students button [3] at the bottom of the list.

You can moderate multiple students at once that are receiving the same accommodation.
  1. If more than one student in the course is receiving the same accommodation (i.e., 15 minutes extra time or 2 attempts), you can select the checkboxes next to each student’s name from the Moderate Quiz page.
  2. Once all students have been selected, scroll to the bottom of the list and click Change Extension for [X] Selected Students.
  3. The Student Extensions dialogue box will open.
  4. Enter the extensions and select the Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt checkbox.
  5. When finished, click the Save button.
Once saved, the entered extensions (time and/or attempts) will be applied to all selected students.
